Managing Exam Stress

We can all experience moments of stress and anxiety.  Events including exams can be a stressful time for students.

To help manage stress over the coming weeks, we recommend:

Take regular breaks

It’s very important to have regular study breaks and make time for relaxation and exercise.  We recommend practicing mindfulness by meditation, going for a walk or taking some time to focus on your interests and hobbies.

Taking breaks is just as important as studying because it allows your brain to process the information you have just learnt.  Without study breaks your brain will have information overload which then results in stress and anxiety.  So remember to take a break!

Look after yourself!

When studying hard for exams it is very easy to forget to look after yourself.  This means getting a good night sleep and making the time to eat healthy food. We recommend eating more fruit and vegetables to keep your energy levels up and stress levels down.

If you feel like your mental health is failing due to stress then please ask for support from your family, friends or even speak to one of our Pharmacists.  Sometimes stress may come from your family because they want you to do your best but it is important to remember all you can do is your best and what is meant for you will not pass you.

Limit caffeine

Caffeine and energy drinks can give you a massive lift for a short period of time.  But they’re not good for you long term.  They can make you feel sick and really interfere with your sleep and your ability to concentrate.  It is very important that you limit your caffeine intake during exams because it inhibits your overall performance.

And remember it is only an exam, there are always other alternatives! It is only a short period of your life, the exams you have prepared for will be over in a matter of days.  Once the exam is over, there’s nothing more that can be done.  Plan something to look forward to after your exams to unwind and relax! You deserve it!

Best of luck!
