Common Conditions Service

The Common Conditions Service is a pharmacist-led clinical service delivered under nationally approved HSE clinical protocols and is now available from your local Adrian Dunne Pharmacy. Trained pharmacists assess and treat a range of everyday health conditions, helping you access timely care while ensuring your safety always comes first.

This service is designed for specific, suitable conditions only and includes clear referral to your GP or hospital when needed.

What is the Common Conditions Service?

The Common Conditions Service allows pharmacists to offer professional healthcare advice and treatment for 8 specific common conditions. Under this service, trained pharmacists can assess your symptoms, decide whether the service is safe and appropriate for you, prescribe prescription-only medication where clinically appropriate, provide self-care advice, or refer you to your GP or hospital if further care is needed.

The common conditions include:

  • Allergic rhinitis (2 years and over) and allergic conjunctivitis (2 years and over)
  • Cold sores (1 month and over)
  • Infective conjunctivitis (6 months and over)
  • Impetigo (2 months and older)
  • Oral thrush (1 month and older)
  • Shingles (18 years and over)
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) in women (16-64 years)
  • Vulvovaginal thrush (16-60 years)

What is the fee for the consultation?

The fee for the professional consultation with our pharmacist is €35.

Following the consultation, the pharmacist may recommend a medication, including a prescribed medication. This fee does not include or cover any medications.

How can I avail of the Common Conditions Service?

Our 13 local community pharmacies are offering a walk in service or you can request an appointment by completing the online form below. Please note, if using the walk in service, during busy times you may need to wait until a pharmacist is available to carry out the consultation.

A trained pharmacist will conduct the consultation in a private consultation room and this will last approximately 10 minutes.

The pharmacist will follow a HSE clinical protocol and Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland guidance. In some circumstances the pharmacist will not be able to complete the consultation due to CCS protocol & guidelines and you will be referred to A&E or your GP.

At the end of the consultation, the pharmacist will discuss the best treatment based on your symptoms. This may include prescription medicine or over the-counter medicine and/or self-care advice.

If the pharmacist recommends a prescription, you’ll receive it during your consultation and can choose to have it dispensed at our pharmacy or any pharmacy you prefer. The prescribed item/s may be covered under your Medical Card or the Drugs Payment Scheme (DPS).
