The Importance of SPF (even in Ireland)

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and while we may not be basking in Mediterranean sunshine every day here in Ireland, that doesn’t mean we’re off the hook when it comes to sun protection. In fact, the often-overlooked Irish sun can still do serious damage to your skin, even on those cloudy, drizzly days.

UV Rays Don’t Take a Day Off

Many people associate sunscreen with holidays abroad or heatwaves at home, but UV radiation can penetrate cloud cover and cause damage even when it’s cool outside. In Ireland, up to 90% of UV rays can pass through clouds, meaning your skin is still vulnerable on grey days.

UV radiation is a leading cause of premature ageing and, more seriously, skin cancer. Non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common cancer in Ireland, with over 13,000 new cases diagnosed each year. And it’s rising.

Why SPF Matters Every Single Day

SPF, or sun protection factor, shields your skin from UVB rays, which cause sunburn and contribute to skin cancer. Broad-spectrum sunscreens also protect against UVA rays, which penetrate deeper into the skin and cause long-term damage like wrinkles and pigmentation.

Using SPF daily helps to:

  • Protect against skin cancer
  • Prevent premature ageing
  • Reduce hyperpigmentation and dark spots
  • Keep your skin healthy and resilient

Even if you sit near windows or spend time outdoors during your lunch break, you’re still exposed to UV. UVA rays can penetrate glass, so whether you’re working from a bright office or driving, that daily SPF is still your skin’s best friend.

Irish Skin Type is Naturally More Vulnerable

Many of us in Ireland have fair skin that burns easily and tans poorly and this increases the risk. The HSE classifies most Irish people under Skin Types I and II, meaning we’re more susceptible to UV damage and skin cancers. This makes daily SPF an especially important habit to adopt, not just for the summer, but all year-round.

In honour of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, why not take a moment to:

  1. Add SPF to your morning routine, even if it’s cloudy.
  2. Wear protective clothing and hats when you’re outdoors.
  3. Check your skin regularly for any changes or unusual moles.
  4. Talk to friends and family about sun safety.
