IN ASSOCIATION WITH

If you’re planning on visiting certain parts of the world, you may need to get some vaccinations before you set off. These can help prevent you from getting many serious diseases which we don’t normally have in Ireland.
The childhood vaccination programme in Ireland protects you from a number of diseases, but you may need extra vaccinations if you’re planning on travelling to certain parts of the world.
Our trained pharmacists can now administer travel vaccinations – please note a doctor’s prescription is needed for the required vaccines to be administered.
How can I get my travel vaccinations?
To get your travel vaccinations you will first need to complete a travel health assessment with a doctor. You can complete your assessment online at webdoctor.ie* (if aged 17+ years) – their doctors will prescribe travel vaccine prescriptions tailored to your travel destination/s, where clinically appropriate. Cost for this assessment is €50.
Once you’ve completed the assessment and a prescription for the vaccinations/medications has been issued, this can be sent to your chosen Adrian Dunne Pharmacy. Our pharmacist will contact you to schedule your vaccination appointment and collect a deposit for the cost of the vaccines. The remaining balance will be due at your appointment. For a guide on the cost of a wide range of travel vaccinations and medications visit Webdoctor.ie’s Travel Health assessment web page. The fee to administer the vaccinations in our pharmacy is €20 per vaccine, up to a maximum of €60 per appointment (€50 for Students).
Remember, it’s important to plan ahead as some vaccinations may be needed several weeks before departure. Ideally, you should try to get your vaccinations six to eight weeks before travelling.

How long before travel do I need to get my travel vaccinations?
You should arrange a travel health assessment at least 8 weeks BEFORE your planned departure, as you may need to start your vaccination course well before you plan to travel. You will want to have enough time to complete the vaccination course recommended.
Many common vaccinations need to be given at least 4-6 weeks before you travel.
It will also take a few weeks for the vaccinations to be effective and some require more than one dose.
In some cases, your vaccinations may not be in stock and have to be ordered by your doctor or pharmacist. This can take several days. An early start to the process is important.
What will I need to complete my Doctor Travel Health Assessment?
When completing your Doctor Travel Health Assessment, it’s important to have a few key details to hand to help best understand your risk of getting a disease, and to help the doctor work out which vaccinations and medicines are recommended for you.
These include:
- The countries and regions you’ll be visiting
- The activities you’ll be doing
- How long you’ll be spending in each destination
- Your history of previous vaccinations (if you’re unsure of your vaccination history, please check with your GP)
Your age and general health will also affect which travel vaccinations and medicines are suitable for you.
What will happen when I attend the pharmacy for my vaccinations?
- You will need to bring valid photographic identification (ID) to all of your vaccination appointments. This will be checked by the pharmacist to ensure the details on your ID match the details on the prescription issued via your online account.
- Your pharmacist will tell you more about the service and review relevant parts of your medical history. They will discuss how the vaccination will be given and will give you the opportunity to ask any questions.
- If you have a fever on the day of your appointment, you may be asked to return when you’re better.
- If everything is ok from a medical perspective, and you are happy, you will receive your vaccination. It will be given in your upper arm, so please wear loose-fitting clothing or short sleeves.
- It will be necessary for you to stay in the pharmacy for 15 minutes after your vaccination, just in case you have any immediate side effects.
- Your pharmacist will advise you on when to make your next appointment, depending on how many vaccinations you require.
