WHAT IS BLOOD PRESSURE?

Everyone has blood pressure. It shows the amount of work that your heart must do to pump blood around the body. Two numbers measure your level of blood pressure. The top number records blood pressure when the pressure is at its highest as your heart muscle squeezes out the blood from your heart – this is called systolic pressure. Then your heart relaxes, which allows the blood to flow back into your heart – this is called diastolic pressure.

Average blood pressure is usually usually about 120 (systolic) over 80 (diastolic). The only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to get it measured as most people with high blood pressure will not notice any symptoms.

24 Hour Blood Pressure

Your blood pressure fluctuates over 24 hours.  24 hour blood pressure measurement (ABPM) will accurately identify if you have high blood pressure or if your blood pressure is too low (to ensure the blood pressure medication you are on is working for you).

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) is when your blood pressure is measured as you move around, living your normal daily life. It is measured for up to 24 hours.

HOW DOES THIS BLOOD PRESSURE TEST WORK?

A 24 hour blood pressure test requires you to wear a blood pressure monitor for 24 hours and takes blood pressure readings at regular intervals throughout the day and night.

A small digital blood pressure monitor is attached to a belt around your waist and connected to a cuff around your upper arm.  It is small enough not to affect your normal daily life and you can even sleep with it on.

As it monitors your blood pressure for 24 hours, this form of screening is more accurate than standard blood pressure tests. Doctors will often recommend 24 hour blood pressure monitoring before deciding if you need medication to lower your blood pressure or whether your medication needs to be changed.

We will fit the device in-store and remove it the following day. You will be provided with a detailed report showing the changes in your blood pressure over the 24-hour period. This report can then be brought to your GP.
